The Albanian Constitutional Court is functional

After three years of political cramp, the minimum quorum of six members was achieved and the Constitutional Court of Albania is now functional.

President Ilir Meta decreed the nomination of lawyer Përparim Kalo as the sixth member of the court. Kalo was nominated by the Council of Judicial Appointments.

After the appointment, Kalo took oath, making the minimal quorum complete.

The lawyer has almost 30 years of experience as an expert in justice and legal cases.

Just two days before Kalo’s appointment, the fifth member, prosecutor Altin Binaj, took oath. Binaj was nominated by the Parliament.

Meanwhile, it is believed a seventh member of the court will be appointed in the following days.

After the long political cramp on the issue, the case of the Constitutional Court got solved in just a few days. This is related also to the constant pressure of the foreign ambassadors in Albania and the European Union conditions.

Making the court functional was actually the number one condition from the EU to start the negotiating process.

In these three years, the Constitutional Court has been one of the hottest political topics in the country. The political parties accused one another as the reason why the case was not being solved.

After reaching the quorum, the foreign ambassadors stated that it was a great news for Albania and the biggest step to open the process of negotiations with the EU.

Meanwhile there haven’t been comments from the prime minister, Edi Rama, or from the leader of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha, on the issue.
